ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PATENTS GROWING EXPONENTIALLY
The attached chart depicts a graphical trend of the growing number of issued patents and published patent applications that involve Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AI patents fall into two general categories. Those that use AI for a specific application such as autonomous driving cars, image recognition, data analysis, etc., and those that recite novel AI algorithms, such as supervised learning techniques in neural networks. Both face unique challenges under the current landscape of software patents, and it will be interesting to see how enforceable these patents will be 5-10 years from now.
The index was generated based on AI related search terms from published abstracts at the USPTO. Accordingly, the chart is intended to provide a general sense of the current trends in AI patents.
