Edward T. Lentz
Emeritus
Ed Lentz’s practice spans the full range of intellectual property law, including patent counseling, developing and implementing global patent strategies and product lifecycle management strategies, rendering legal opinions, overseeing patent preparation and prosecution, providing litigation support including expert opinions, and negotiating and drafting technology transactions. Ed represents a wide range of clients, including startups, universities, mid-size companies and large multinational companies in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, bioinfomatics, and related fields. He has written and spoken extensively on IP issues.
Ed began his career with E.I. Dupont de Nemours & Co. as a staff patent attorney. He later became SmithKline Beecham’s (SB, now GlaxoSmithKline) first biotechnology patent attorney. At SB, he was initially responsible for developing and implementing patent strategies for protecting SB’s cloning and expression technologies, which lead to him becoming manager of SB’s biotechnology patent group, and eventually to head SB’s US-based IP groups in 1990. In 1998, Ed was appointed General Counsel-U.S. with responsibility for North American Pharmaceutical Legal Operations, North America Consumer Healthcare Legal Operations, and Litigation groups. These groups were responsible for all FDA matters pertaining to the development, approval for marketing, sales & marketing, and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, biologicals and over-the-counter healthcare products, all non-IP disputes in the U.S. and Canada including commercial, advertising, product liability, and employment litigation, and all U.S. government investigations. In 2001, Ed joined Morgan Lewis & Bockius in their Philadelphia office as a Senior Counsel and in 2003, Ed began a solo practice in affiliation with Hoffman Warnick.
